Legumes are plants that are very good as livestock feed; some legumes can be used as food or raw vegetables and are also utilized as medicinal plants. Another advantage of legumes is their high protein content, as well as the presence of nodules on their roots, which can be used as biofertilizer; however, not all legumes are capable of forming nodules. Nodule formation can occur if there is compatibility between Rhizobium bacteria and their host plant. This study used 5 types of legumes, namely L1: lamtoro (Leucaena leucochepala); L2: kaliandra (Calliandra calothyrsus); L3: centrocema (Centrocema pubescens); L4: white-flowered turi (Sesbania grandiflora); and L5: red-flowered turi (Sesbania grandiflora). The soil type used was ultisol. The results obtained show that nodules only formed on the roots of kaliandra (Caliandra calothyrsus) and centrocema (Centrocema pubescen). Nodules that can be used as inoculants and serve as a source of biofertilizer are active nodules. Active nodules are characterized by a red color when chopped or split. Active nodules in kaliandra (Caliandra calothyrsus) were found to be 0.8%, and in centrocema (Centrocema pubescen) 0.4%. This research is still limited to a few types of legumes, so further studies with other legume species are needed to understand the symbiosis of legumes with Rhizobium bacteria in forming active nodules that can be recommended as biofertilizers, and to increase the number of active nodules, the age of the legume plants needs to be increased.
