Abstract
The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is an insect that holds positive benefits at present. The imago of BSF is black in color, indicating the presence of melanin pigment. Melanin plays a role in color variation in living organisms and can also serve as a natural and environmentally friendly dye source. In this study, melanin was isolated from adult BSF using an alkali-acid method and then analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). Melanin characterization revealed typical melanin peaks in the FTIR spectrum, such as hydroxyl (-OH) groups, amine group (-NH), carboxyl (-COOH) groups, and aromatic groups. The results of this study indicate that BSF is a promising source of melanin with wide-ranging potential applications.
