Abstract

Naga Sopa Village is located in the central part of North Sumatera Province, about 120 km from Medan. The village is surrounded by oil palm plantations. The people of Naga Sopa village are mostly farmers. Some of the people who own the fields have made use of oil palm plantations. Improper quality of palm oil causes the selling price to be erratic, so some people have tried to switch to cocoa commodities. The farmer group of Setia Usaha is one that has tried to grow cocoa, but the results obtained are also less than satisfactory. One factor which caused low production and quality of cocoa beans produced was the quality of the seeds.  USU team provided solutions by supporting qualified and certified cocoa seed. It also provided appropriate farming technology how to treat seeds during the pre-nursery phase. Other technology provided was joining plants by side grafting technique to joint the cacao plants that have been fruitful and have a large stem with scion derived from high-quality cacao plant. From this effort, it is expected that the farmer will be the pioneer in producing good quality cocoa seeds.
