Abstract
Through the COVID-19 pandemic, this study aims to identify euphemism in information reported through Mandarin online news media Guoji Ribao and Hao Bao in forms of sentences. This study is based on Allan and Burridge euphemism theory. This study uses discourse analysis technique with qualitative approach and COVID-19 pandemic case study. The data collection was conducted from August to September 2021 using 10 news from Guoji Ribao and 10 news from Hao Bao Daily. There are 58 euphemisms obtained in the form of sentences with 5 different effects, the ordering or politely asking, stabilizing situation, refining goals, reproaching or mildly criticizing, and substituting words with negative connotation. From all the five euphemism purposes found, the ordering or politely asking purpose is the dominant effect. This relates to the COVID-19 phenomenon relating to the establishments of new policies to protect the society from the impact of the COVID-19 itself. The euphemism in Mandarin online news media Guoji Ribao and Hao Bao Daily are widely applied as one of the ways to calm the readers regarding the information they receive, while still holding argumentative principle or creating interpretations.
