Abstract
Without underestimating the roles and contributions of other communities, as Cor Passchier said, Medan (city) was formerly established from the activities of Chinese planters and traders since the 1860s. Within the initial centre around an open field on the east side of the Deli River, the development of Medan was then followed by the establishment of the Kesawan area. It is a residential area for the Chinese community as well as a place for providing goods and shops that serve the needs of the community. The Chinese then played the role of intermediary for the minority, which played a dominant role in the growth and development of Medan. This research is entitled 'Tjong Sce Yin Roles and Contributions in the Development of Music Schools in Medan'. Applying the historical explanation theory from Kuntowijoyo, this paper portrays the figure of Tjong Sce Yin (the fifth child of Tjong A Fie), who has contributed to the establishment of a music school. Not only that, but Tjong Sce Yin also contributed to the development of Medan city. He helped build non-formal educational institutions and the Abdi Kasih foundation.
